PUA-Research I Don't Want To Do!
So I've been given a new assignment for a feature at work. One that I'm not feeling very comfortable doing. It's on the PUA or the Pick Up Artist. My friends and I prefer to call them "Douchebags". You know what I'm talking about. The guy with the spiky hair with bleach blonde tips, tanning salon tan, Ryan Seacrest thing going on that will follow you and your friends around all night long....even if your just in Chili's trying to eat some fajitas. Well, there is a company in Boston called Pickup 101 that basically teaches men how to flirt, date, and generally pick up women, transforming average guys into flawless ladies’ men. So their ad says. There's even a book written by Neil Strauss called "The Game: Penetrating the Secret Society of Pickup Artists." that is available for men who may not want to take part in a class. So I've got to talk to the owner of Pickup 101 and read this ridiculous book, which so far just seems like a how-to on how to get yourself a one night stand. The book says that women these days are "smart, independent thinkers, and they have their lives together and they expect the same from men." Thus making the standard pickup line a thing of the past. Men now have to work harder to get a women's attention. The chapters in the book focus on different types of trainings, covering everything from how to dress to managing multiple relationships. The reason I'm uncomfortable doing this is that it just skeeves me out. I am very nervous to talk to these guys and to submit myself to this sort of game playing. On the other hand, it also makes me wonder if us women have made it so hard for men to talk to us that they've had to turn to this type of class or read this type of book. Are we really that bad? Or are they just "douchebags"? Maybe it's a mixture? Who knows. All I know is that if I have to do this, they better air it.
For the record, my favorite pick-up line of all time..."Sweets, you couldn't ignore me if you tried". Not really a pick-up line, but great nonetheless.
