Why do you always want to watch Closer?!?
I have to answer this question. Every time someone wants to watch a movie with me, I yell out “I choose Closer!” It’s not my favorite movie, but I can’t get enough of it and will watch it over and over. It’s such a great flick. Once you get over the initial burst of salty language and severe dysfunction, there’s a certain joy that comes from seeing each character get what’s coming to them. It’s rare that a film so thoroughly involves it’s audience without presenting a likeable character. All four do such terrible things to one another that you can’t root for anyone. I think that aspect of the movie is why some people don’t like it. Audiences like to root for a character, but you just can’t in this movie. Both the men and women in this movie do their psychological worst and most ruthless to push away those they had previously pulled close (get it close closer? Haha!). In my opinion the cast is what makes this movie. I hate Julia Roberts, so in this movie it was refreshing to see her do something other than flash her horse tooth grin. Clive Owen can do no wrong in my book. He was in the London stage version and I think he knew his character inside and out. Jude Law surprised me the most though. I didn’t think he could pull off such a dark story with his charm-boy insouciance, but he mixes that with this quiet despair and pulls the character off remarkably. Natalie Portman truly makes her entrance into adulthood movies in this one. The emotions that she can portray with just one look are astounding. Anyway, that’s why I love Closer!!!
